Chest physiotherapy is a technique used to loosen secretions from the lungs and respiratory tract.  This technique is particularly effective for individuals with thickened chest secretions or a weak cough.  Most commonly, it is used to treat children or adults with cystic fibrosis, neuromuscular diseases or pneumonia.

Treatments consist of various external maneuvers including chest percussions, vibrations and postural drainage, combined with deep breathing and coughing exercises.  The goal of treatment is to increase secretion clearance to prevent infection and help clients breath more freely.
